When should we schedule our newborn photographs?

Seattle Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

Getting newborn photographs organized can sound a little daunting. And having a photographer in your space after giving birth can be overwhelming if you haven't considered your own boundaries. One of the main questions I am asked by expecting parents is "When should we take our lifestyle newborn photographs?"

When faced with this question, my answer is always..."When you are comfortable having me in your space." This is a simple enough answer, but when you think about it, you are in an exceptionally delicate and beautiful transition in your lives. Birth is a transformation, for both parents and your family. If you are thinking about having a photographer come to document your family in the days and weeks after your baby's arrival, I suggest reaching out before baby comes, so ensure you get the photographer you want!

For timing, I have been in the delivery room to document the  moment of birth, I have joined a family 6 hours after their newborn has arrived and every timeline afterward and joined a family 2 months postpartum. The type of newborn photography that I produce is intimate and encompassing. We spend time together in your space, as I learn your routines and see your home and life together through a different lens. These images can be achieved at ANY time in your journey.

BUT, there are certain timelines to keep in mind if you want to capture a specific part of your newborn baby.

Weeks 1 - 2: Curled up baby - when their arms and legs still curl up into their body, mimicking being in the womb. Baby sleeps most of the time. Newest, newborn images during this time.

Weeks 3 - 4: Baby is still brand new, but doesn't curl up or sleep as often. This is great timing for those that need a little more time to recover postpartum. Babies are awake more often and have more expressions.

1 month: Still a newborn baby, possible smiles and awake more. At this point, we can also have our session outside. Baby is bigger and able to go out for a little longer.

2+ months: Still a baby! You are a little more settled into your routine and new life with baby, and we capture it in exactly the same way. Less opportunity for sleeping baby pictures, as they are not asleep all the time. But baby is showing more personality and awake more often.

When communicating with families for scheduling their Seattle newborn photographs, I generally put a hold about 2 weeks out from your "expected due/guess date".  This date can always be rescheduled if baby is later than expected, or you need more time to recover after delivery.

These are a collection of newborn photographs with a 6 day old baby!

Creating images of my clients during their big life moments has been forever humbling. Remembering my own baby in the hours and days after birth during every single one of my Seattle lifestyle newborn photography sessions!

I cannot wait to connect and photograph your new babies!
