Don't Wait for the Fall to take your Family Photos!

Seattle Newborn + Family Photographer

July 15th, 2022

Family photography is MORE than just a single photo on a card sent once a year. Much much more. Family photographs are an opportunity for you to consider what is most important for your family to remember about right now. To be present in the planning and IN the moment when you take your photographs with me. It is an opportunity to really connect with your family, to put your phone down and have nothing else to do other than be there.

Your family is worth being photographed. Yup, every single one of you.

And you don't need to wait for the Fall to take your family photos!

Your family photos are meant to tell your story, a way to remember details your mind will soon forget. Something to come back to year after year. These photographs are intended for YOU and there is no expectations for what you use them for. None. 90% of my clients will never post their photographs on social media or online. Because these images are not to show off, they are for you. For your future.

Yeah, I know, heavy. But ask yourself, what do you have from your childhood that you treasure?

And did those memories only happen during the months of October and November? No. So why wait?

I have a few reasons to help convince you that you don't have to wait for the Fall to take your family photos;

* Weather in the PNW is unpredictable in the Fall anyways.

The further away from summer we get, the more your photographer will need to manage the weather. We become honorary weather people for most of the year, constantly checking our apps and asking each other about conditions at popular locations.

October and November are beautiful if we get the ideal weather. And I LOVE a perfect crisp fall day with warm light for family photos! But, if it is a really wet year, we will get very little color and even less opportunities to have a session without rain.

All that being said, I love a good foggy, moody Winter family session. Even in the Winter the Pacific Northwest is full of evergreen trees to surround ourselves with.

* Spring is full of vibrant colors!

The return of a little warmth also brings with it the green and color and the return of life to our region. The colors are bright and vibrant from the rain, and we can easily plan around those showers. OR we embrace them and go for it, because there is nothing like embracing it and playing in the rain with your loved ones without a care in the world!

May is full of bursting trees and early life while June is the month of wildflowers in Washington state.

* Summer in the Pacific Northwest is absolutely beautiful!

A lot of us consider the summers in the PNW to be our best kept secret. Mountain ranges with unlimited hikes, water with unlimited options to play... beaches, lakes, rivers. Islands that look like they came out of a fantasy book with nature all around you and accessible from all the big and small cities.

The summers here are why we put up with the other 9 months of the year with unpredictable and moody weather. We all count down the days until Summer Solstice, but funny enough, welcome the cooler weather that comes with Fall. We are a fickle bunch when it comes to weather! (maybe that's just me)

* LIFE happens all year long.

Your baby turns one, or your family gets together for a reunion after years apart. You have a yearly camping trip with old friends, or you are moving and want to catch these last moments  before a big change. There are no RULES to when you can take family photos. In fact, MAKE your own rules!

* YOU are busy during the Fall months, and so are photographers.

School is in full swing and so are activities and sports, so weekends are likely your only option for an appointment (and not many of those), you are organizing the holidays or travel. And it can all be a lot. The summer is the perfect time to lean into telling your family story. I know, because this is my reality too.

Getting your family portraits done before the chaos of the school year starting can be a gift to yourself!

* Who said your Holiday Card picture had to be from the Holiday season?

And who said we needed to send that holiday card in the first place?

No really? What rules do we have to follow when it comes to what we share or don't share with others? Your family, your rules.

I had one year where we used a photo from New Year's day of that year... and another year only summer pictures!

I invite you to get rid of the idea that family photos are ONLY for getting a holiday card photo. Family photos are for YOU and you alone. I aim to deliver galleries to my clients that are full of real, raw, full spectrum life! Let's make pictures together that are as unique as you are!
